  • The USA was eliminated from the 2023 Women's World Cup by perennial rivals Sweden
  • A goalless 120 minutes dominated by USWNT was decided on penalties
  • The defending champions lost by a whisker after VAR made a tight call for Sweden's winner

The President of the United States of America, Joe Biden, has congratulated the country's contingent on the 2023 FIFA Women's World Cup despite their elimination, and this has not boded well with a renowned broadcaster.

The USA struggled to make it out of the group. Still, they put up a dominant performance against their perennial rivals, Sweden, whom they played against in a sixth consecutive tournament as the match had to be decided on penalties.

Chelsea women's goalkeeper Zecira Musovic put up a man-of-the-match performance with 11 saves in 120 minutes, as noted by Goal, but did not have to save any spot kick in the shootout.

Sophia Smith and veteran forward Megan Rapinoe blazed their penalties over the bar while Kelly O'Hara hit the post with her effort. Alyssa Naeher appeared to have saved Lina Hurtig's penalty, but VAR adjudged it crossed the line by a whisker.

Piers Morgan questions Joe Biden

Biden was quick to shower the women with adulation despite their elimination in the round of 16 with a tweet that was seen in bad context by many audiences:

".@USWNT, you’ve made your country proud. Congratulations on an incredible run. This team is something special and I’m looking forward to seeing how you continue to inspire Americans with your grit and determination – on and off the field."

One notable figure who disagreed with the post was renowned British broadcaster, Piers Morgan.

"They just put in their worst-ever World Cup performance and most of them refused to sing the National Anthem. Who did they make proud, exactly?" he fired back.

According to ESPN, it's the four-time world champions' worst outing at the tournament. The first time where they will not make the podium as they have never finished below third in previous Mundial.

Carli Lloyd berates USWNT stars

Sports Brief reported on former captain Carli Lloyd berating US players for their dancing celebrations after narrowly securing a draw against Portugal to reach the round of 16.

Lloyd claimed she had never seen anything like this from the world powerhouse after veterans Megan Rapinoe, Alex Morgan and Crystal Dunn were laughing and dancing after the game.
